Website Accessibility: New Federal Rules and Your Library Website
Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires state and local governments to ensure that all services, programs, and activities are accessible to people with disabilities. On April 24, 2024, the Department of Justice’s final rule updated regulations specifically addressing the accessibility of digital public services, web-based content, and mobile applications provided by state and local governments. The rule ensures that individuals with disabilities have equal access to essential digital public services and clearly mandates that public sector websites and applications comply with modern accessibility standards. It went into effect in April 2024; governments and affected organizations have until April 2026 or April 2027 to come into compliance, depending on the size of the municipality. The rule applies to both municipal libraries and 501(c)3 public libraries that receive funding from their municipality or the State of Rhode Island, including funding through the Office of Library and Information Services.
Web Accessibility is a series of design, development, and content best practices that ensures digital public services are accessible to everyone regardless of ability, technology, or circumstance. Learn more about the rule and how your library can position itself for compliance, while making your website more accessible to users of all abilities.
For more information on the DOJ Rule, view the ADA’s Fact Sheet: New Rule on the Accessibility of Web Content and Mobile Apps Provided by State and Local Governments.
If any reasonable accommodation is needed to ensure equal access or participation, contact the Office of Library and Information Services at (401) 574-9300 not less than three (3) business days in advance of the meeting or program date. More advanced notice is highly advisable.
