Financial Crimes & the Latest Scams

This program is presented on behalf of the RI Library Association's Financial Literacy Roundtable:

There is an abundance of crafty financial crimes and clever scams – online auction item scams, debt relief scams, investment schemes, exploitation – designed to trick even savvy individuals. These crimes are often carried out online and can affect all of us, especially targeted groups like the elderly. Knowing what to look for can help librarians and their patrons avoid falling victim to these scammers. The RILA Financial Literacy Roundtable will host John Clarkson, Senior Vice President of Security and Fraud for Pawtucket Credit Union to address the latest scams so you can be in the know.

Since 2004, John Clarkson has been the Senior Vice President of Security and Fraud for Pawtucket Credit Union. Clarkson joined the Pawtucket Police Department in 1983, attaining the rank of Detective Lieutenant and spent the last 7 years of his career with the PPD in charge of the Major Crime Unit.

Clarkson attended Roger Williams College while employed with the Pawtucket Police Department and graduated in 1994 with a BS in Criminal Justice. Clarkson has attended numerous seminars and conferences on Fraud and BSA/AML (Bank Secrecy Act/ Anti Money Laundering) and is a member of IAFCI (International Associations of Financial Crime Investigators).
