Welcoming New Americans and English Learners
Creating a welcoming, inclusive library environment for immigrants, refugees, and anyone whose first language is not English may seem daunting. Or perhaps you have tried it, but you did not get the outcomes that you hoped to see. Join your colleagues at this program where you will learn about successful steps taken by one library and then take those ideas back to your library and community.
Until 2016, Worcester Public Library’s main location in downtown Worcester, MA had space for World Language and ESL materials on the first floor near the entrance, but the area had been mostly neglected and ignored. In recent years, the creation of a New Americans Corner has transformed the space into a vibrant area with updated collections in 13 languages, multilingual signage, and connections with community organizations and events. New patrons are introduced to the space and the library overall through programming and outreach. Hear about what has worked, what hasn’t, and get inspired to welcome immigrants, refugees, and English learners into your library!
This program is part of the OLIS Urban Libraries Roundtable but everyone in the RI library community is welcome to register and attend!
If any reasonable accommodation is needed to ensure equal access or participation, contact the Office of Library and Information Services at (401) 574-9300 not less than three (3) business days in advance of the meeting or program date. More advanced notice is highly advisable.
