Digital Discovery at the International Tennis Hall of Fame

Digital Discovery at the International Tennis Hall of Fame

The International Tennis Hall of Fame preserves and promotes the history of tennis and celebrates its champions. The Hall of Fame is set on the property of the Newport Casino, originally constructed in 1880 as the premier setting for sport and socializing in Gilded Age Newport. Designed by McKim, Mead & White, its campus featured shops, dining, lodging, and leisure activities.

Beginning in 2017, the International Tennis Hall of Fame embarked on a multi-year project to digitize its vast museum collection. With the addition of an Isilon Scale-out NAS storage* system, the museum can build a comprehensive digital archive to engage tennis fans around the globe, to encourage online learning, and to build new programs. Due to space constraints, at any given time, the public has access to only 2% of the overall collection in the museum. In 2018, the museum began photographing items in-house with professional photographers and scanning items off-site, eventually to be put online and linked with our database. The museum is photographing items by collection, and has completed the fashion, ball cans, and racquets, and begun the trophies, ephemeral items, and prints. Slides, ephemeral prints, and photographic prints were photographed off-site.

The first two online exhibits, “Courting Fashion” and “Tins, Cans, and Cartons” showcase the fashion and tennis ball can collections, with another on tennis racquets debuting in late November. Join the museum staff as they give a rundown of their digitization processes and get a peek inside the International Tennis Hall of Fame vaults to see what will be digitized next.
